If you have been thinking about straightening your teeth, chances are you have already asked yourself one question: how long does Invisalign actually take? It is one of the most common things patients want to know before committing to treatment — and it is a completely fair question. Nobody wants to sign up for something without knowing what they are getting into.
The honest answer is that it depends. But that does not mean we cannot give you a clear, useful picture of what to expect. In this guide, we walk through the full Invisalign journey from your very first consultation at Smilepod through to the moment you slot in your final retainer — and everything in between.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a system of clear, removable aligners that gradually move your teeth into the position agreed during your treatment plan. Each aligner is custom-made to fit your teeth precisely, and you progress through a series of them — each one making small, controlled adjustments — until your smile reaches its final position.
Unlike traditional fixed braces, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed when you eat, drink, brush, and floss. For most adults, this makes them a far more practical and discreet option for straightening teeth.
At Smilepod, Invisalign is available from £1,950 for a single arch, with fixed prices and no hidden extras agreed at the outset of your treatment.
So, How Long Does Invisalign Take?
The typical Invisalign treatment timeline falls somewhere between 6 and 18 months for most patients. However, the range is wider than that, and the right answer for you depends on the complexity of your case.
| Case Type | Approximate Duration | Aligners Required |
|---|---|---|
| I7 (very mild) | 3 – 4 months | Up to 7 aligners |
| Lite (mild to moderate) | 4 – 9 months | 8 – 14 aligners |
| Moderate | 9 – 14 months | 15 – 20 aligners |
| Full / Comprehensive | 12 – 18 months | 15 – 30 aligners |
The key factors that influence your timeline are the severity of crowding or spacing, whether any bite correction is needed, how consistently you wear your aligners each day, and whether refinements are required towards the end of treatment.
The Smilepod Invisalign Timeline: Week by Week
Here is how the journey typically unfolds at Smilepod:
Week 1 — Free Initial Consultation
Your journey begins with a free consultation at one of our six London studios. One of our Invisalign-trained clinicians will listen to what you want to achieve, assess your teeth and bite, and advise whether Invisalign is the right option for you. There is no pressure and no commitment at this stage — just a clear, honest conversation about your smile.
Week 2 — Impressions, Scans, and Photographs
Once you decide to proceed, detailed impressions, 3D scans, and photographs of your teeth are taken. These are sent to Invisalign’s laboratory, where your bespoke treatment plan is created using their digital planning technology.
Weeks 3–4 — Review Your Treatment Plan
At this appointment, your clinician walks you through your personalised treatment plan, including a digital preview of how your teeth will move at each stage and what your final result will look like. If you are happy with the plan, your aligners are ordered. Your price is fixed at this point — no surprises later.
Weeks 5–6 — First Aligners Fitted
Your first set of aligners arrives and is fitted at the clinic. Your clinician will show you how to insert and remove them and answer any questions you have. At Smilepod, the recommendation is to wear your aligners for 22 hours per day — removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing your teeth. This is the moment treatment officially begins.
Weeks 7 Onwards — Regular Progress Reviews
Throughout your treatment, you will attend regular review appointments so your clinician can check that your teeth are tracking correctly. Dentists now often recommend changing aligners every week rather than every two weeks, which can meaningfully shorten overall treatment time. Your clinician will advise the right change frequency for your specific plan.
End of Treatment — Retainers
When you have worn your final aligner, your clinician will check that the planned movement has been completed and your bite feels stable. Attachments are removed, and you will be fitted for Vivera retainers — three sets are included in your Smilepod Invisalign package. Retainers are worn full-time initially and then transition to night-time wear to keep your results stable long-term.
What About Refinements?
Refinements are additional aligners used to fine-tune tooth position if teeth have not quite reached their planned final position. They are a normal and expected part of many Invisalign treatments — not a sign that anything has gone wrong. In some cases, refinements are included within the treatment plan itself; this is usually the case with Full/Comprehensive Treatment packages. Where refinements are not included, they are available at Smilepod at £349 per course.
The Single Biggest Factor: Wear Time
The most important thing you can do to keep your treatment on track is to wear your aligners for the recommended 22 hours per day. At Smilepod, patients are advised to remove their aligners only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing their teeth — and to put them straight back in afterwards.
Patients who are consistent with wear time almost always finish on schedule. Those who regularly remove their aligners for extended periods risk their teeth not tracking as planned, which can lead to delays and the need for refinements. Think of it this way: the aligners can only work when they are in your mouth.
