FAQ

Why do I need to visit smilepod regularly for a “clean” when I clean my own teeth every day?

No matter how well people look after their teeth and gums, very few maintain perfect daily oral hygiene.  Plaque is easily missed between teeth and around the gum line.  If it’s missed regularly, it can mineralise into a hard, rough, cement-like material known as tartar.  Plaque and tartar are the primary factors leading to the development and progression of periodontal (gum) disease.  Regular visits to a Smilepod ensures the teeth are kept free of bacterial irritants and that any gum problem can be addressed promptly.

I drink coffee/tea/red wine or smoke. Is there a limit on how often I should get my teeth cleaned?

While there is no limit, a follow-up maintenance programme will be customized for you after we complete an initial assessment. The programme or course of treatment recommended to you by your Dental professional will be based entirely on your individual needs.

Should I continue to see my dentist for dental check-ups?

Yes. You should also see your dentist for regular appointments or if recommended by your dental hygiene provider at Smilepod.

Why do I need to get my teeth cleaned?

#1. To have good oral hygiene
Over time, everyone suffers from a build-up of plaque on their teeth. Having your teeth cleaned will remove plaque that has built up in areas that you have difficulty reaching.

#2. To prevent Halitosis (Bad Breath)
A thorough cleaning can help individuals with bad breath. If you suffer with halitosis, not having your teeth cleaned regularly will definitely make it worse.

#3. To have a nice smile
Don't you want always to look your best? Of course you do! By visiting your hygienist on a regular basis you can have your teeth cleaned and whitened, and take care of any other issues that may arise before your teeth are damaged. There have been major advances in cosmetic dentistry in the past few years, so there's no reason to believe that any problem you may have can't be addressed.

#4. Your overall health
Did you know that the condition of teeth has been directly linked to heart disease? Although these studies have not been 100% conclusive, there is evidence that gum disease, resulting from poor oral hygiene, may be linked to heart attacks and strokes.

#5. To prevent Gingivitis
Do your gums bleed, especially when you brush your teeth? This is a condition known as Gingivitis and if you don't take care of it you may eventually lose your teeth. Gingivitis is a warning sign of gum disease, which is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. If it’s treated in time it can be reversed - however, it will get much worse if left unattended.

#6. The prevention of Oral Cancer
This is one of the best reasons to visit a dentist regularly, especially if you're a tobacco user. Oral cancer can be caught in its early stages if you have your teeth cleaned regularly.

#7. To keep your original teeth
Regardless of all of the advances in dental medicine and denture wear, it's still desirable to keep your own original teeth if at all possible. People who wear dentures have difficulty eating certain types of foods and dental implants can cost as much as £2,000 per tooth.
