After the age of 30, our bodies lose approximately 1% of hyaluronic acid (a substance found naturally in the body). This can result in the face losing volume and appearing aged. Signs include deeper nasolabial folds, marionette lines, a deeper mentalis fold and thinning or turned down lips.

Dermal fillers give volume to the creases and folds in the facial areas which appear during the aging process. Hyaluronic acid fillers are injected underneath these folds to replace the volume lost and create a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers can be used to define high lip lines or for lip augmentation. The effects of dermal fillers typically last 6-12 months at which point the procedure need to be repeated.

Dentists are trained to take into account the aesthetic ratios of lips to teeth, smile dynamics (partial or full smiles), phonetics and the relationship between the teeth and the soft tissue surrounding the mouth. They can offer dermal fillers to complement cosmetic dentistry treatments.

When physicians and nurses offer dermal fillers, they typically use topical anaesthetics and ice on the skin. Dentists regularly administer local anaesthetics in their day to day work which have a much stronger numbing effect. Dentists use local anaesthetics during the dermal filler treatment to ensure that the procedure is as pain free as possible; another reason why dentists are so popular for this type of treatment.
